Carnaval de Barranquilla

Carnaval de Barranquilla is one of the most predominant folklore celebrations in Colombia.  Though its origins are relatively unknown it is said to represent a mixture of Afro-Caribbean, Pagan, and Catholic traditions. It has evolved to incorporate the varied combinations of the cultures in the Caribbean coastal community of Barranquilla. It includes many different displays of art, music, dance, food and other traditions that reside within and around the country. Angelica Lascar noted that “In 2003, Barranquilla Carnaval was proclaimed by UNESCO to be one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.”(1)
