Las Negritos de Puloy

Las Negritos de Puloy and the Son de Negros are undoubtedly the most controversial part of Carnaval.  They represent the tragic history of slavery in Colombia.  The Spanish Conquistadors brought African natives to the coastal region of Colombia as slaves. Once there, they enslaved Colombian natives as well.  This is perhaps why the locals describe their home as founded on principals of mixture, and identify as a tri-racial nation.(1)  Though, this representation has been brought into public controversy, the government and people of Colombia  hold tightly to this practice. They say that it is an integral part of remembering their history and celebrating their diversity.
