Carnaval de Barranquilla
Purpose
The practice of the Carnaval tradition started during the 1800’s. Locals dictate that the idea was brought over by the Spanish and the Portuguese invaders, and is why there is such a varied mixture of cultural representations. (2) The texture (3) of Carnaval is embodied in the motto, “Quien lo vive es quien lo goza” which you will hear repeatedly throughout the 4 day celebration. It translates “Who lives it, is who enjoys it.” (1) This is the general attitude of the Barranquilleros, or people who participate in Carnaval. It seems to allow them different privileges and personas than they would portray throughout the rest of the year.
During each day of the celebration there are themed parades that include interpretative street performances. These performances involve many characters that reflexively look at the history of Colombia. (4)
