La Reina

La Reina de Carnaval, or the Carnaval Queen is the most important figure in the festivities. She is responsible for ensuring the city’s happiness throughout the carnival season, which lasts much longer than the 4 day celebration.  She is chosen by the Board of the Foundation Carnaval de Barranquilla (5) and is often related to important political or social figures in Colombia.
One of the most important folkloric performances is the reading of the Carnaval Proclamation, called “El Bando”.  It begins with the current mayor of Barranquilla handing over the keys to the city to La Reina.  She then reads the decree which states the rules of Carnaval.  This is a symbolic transition into the happy state or “animo de feliz” of the carnival season.
